Dahn Hiuni

Read about Former Winnipegger Dan Hiuni's New Play in New York-MURMERS AND INCANTATIONS

Aug 29, 2013

Editor's note: I received an email from Dan  Hiuni who sent me the news release about his play in New York and added "What's really freaky though, is that the play is about/a tribute to my great-grandfather who was in that synagogue in Bialystok [ that was burned by the Nazis]!! So when i read: "Eli Herscovitch Remembers A Man Who Inspired Him - The story of Solomon Ary From Bialystock, Poland, Whose Entire Family Was Burned in a Synagogue by the Nazis"-- it was quite amazing."

Wednesday, August 21 & Thursday, August 22 at 8 pm in New York NY
Special Per formance: Murmurs and Incantations
With David Ilku, Kate Konigisor, Peter Levine, and Peter Schmitz. Music by Yuval Ron. Written and Directed by
Dahn Hiuni.

Mixed Greens is thrilled to present the New York premiere of Murmurs and Incantations, a mixed-media, immersive theater piece by award-winning Israeli per formance artist and playwright Dahn Hiuni. Academy Award-winning Israeli composer Yuval Ron (West Bank Story) will compose original music.

Murmurs and Incantations will take place Wednesday, August 21 and Thursday, August 22, 2013 at 8pm in the
gallery spaces at 531 West 26 Street, First Floor, New York, NY 10001.

Murmurs and Incantations tells the story of a gay, New York per formance artist with creative block who fatefully
travels to Poland in an attempt to revive his art career, only to be fur ther confounded by the disapproving ghost
of his grandfather, a rabbi killed in the Holocaust.

Through the fictitious encounter, Mr. Hiuni gives voice to an ancestor who would have otherwise been lost to history.
In sounding this voice, Hiuni dignifes his great-grandfather’s memory, commemorates his legacy, and stands witness to historical events. As Mr. Hiuni explains, “This aspect of art in general, and theater in particular, can be deeply moral and redemptive.”

Mr. Hiuni's collaboration with Mr. Ron and with co-producer Guy Vidal, is meaningful. Aside from being Israeli artists living and working in the US, all three share family connections to the rich Jewish communities of pre-war Poland. Today, Hiuni, Ron and Vidal are part of a new generation of international artists who utilize their artistic projects as a means of intercultural exchange and reconciliation.

Mixed Greens represents U.S.-based artists that specialize in conceptually driven work in a diversity of media. We are happy to have the opportunity to bring together the theater, art, and per formance worlds of New York for this inventive and innovative event.

The event is open to the public. All tickets $18 general admission.
